A Gift from Mom

Wednesday May 5, 2010

What’s the best gift your mom ever gave you?

It might be a prized family heirloom, the doll she grew up loving, or her mother’s china.

It could be a strong sense of self-confidence, a great sense of humor, or an appreciation for rainy days.

My best gift? My mom modeled balance -- she still does. She knows when to be soft and when to hold the line; when to be concerned and when to leave it to faith; when to hold on and when to let go; when to laugh and when to shed a tear. Hers is a balanced life, and she has left me a clear portrait. I'm so thankful for that gift.

Celebrate your mom today.

All for Mom,

My mom left me a cherished keepsake -- a delightful and happy childhood. Family memories gave me strength during some rocky adult times. I pray I gave my kids the same gift.

My mom gave me a love for Bible stories. One of my best memories is her telling me stories and praying with me at night. For example she would take the strip wash cloth and weave a story about Joseph and his coat of many colors. Though she has been gone for a long time, I still can see her studying her Bible in her favorite chair.

My mom and dad gave us a solid, faithful, loving childhood. We didn't have much but they made it count. I'm very thankful for that.

Among other things, Mom gave me a love of art. She drew and I got to tag along to some of her art classes. I love any craftsmanship.

My mom would probably be embarrassed at this, but she gave me a real healthy view about intimacy. She shared from her heart about all the different types that I'd encounter with my husband, and I'll forever be grateful for that. She wasn't shy, and she shared. And it's been so valuable for me that she told me these truths. It's saved me a lot of angst to know that the ups and down of married life are normal.

My mom offered a shining example of contentment and a child-like faith. Not that I really have either...but still, she was a great role model!

I'm so working on the balance thing. That wisdom I need so badly keeps me on my knees.

My mom gave me a deep appreciation for the reverence of God. One of her "things" was to never lay anything on top of God's Word. It was a symbolic thing, but the deeper lesson stuck. Just one example ...

Happy Mother's Day, Laura!
